John 14:27
I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
Every Christmas, people scurry around trying to find the perfect gift. When my kids were little, it was a Cabbage Patch doll, Tickle Me Elmo, or the latest video game. As a parent, you want to see that sparkle in their eyes as they open the perfect gift. The gift that shows you know them and care about them.
Jesus left us the perfect gift. A gift that keeps on giving, and no, I am not talking about the Jelly of the Month Club, Clark.
Matthew Henry said, “When Christ died. He left a will in which He gave His soul to His Father, His body to Joseph of Arimathea, His clothes to the soldiers, and His mother to John. But to His disciples, who had left all to follow Him, He left not silver or gold, but something far better-His peace!”
God’s peace. If you don’t think that’s the perfect gift, you’ve never tried living without peace.
Charles Spurgeon once said, "The peace of God is that eternal calm which lies far too deep in the human soul to be reached by any external disturbances."
What a gift! A peace that is deep within us, a peace that lasts, a peace that “passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7). And, like all gifts, it is freely given, not earned. God has given us the perfect gift, the gift of peace. All we have to do is accept it.
