Colossians 2:8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.
In the 1970’s Coca Cola ran one of the biggest ad campaigns ever run. The ads said, “It’s the real thing. Coke.”
Coke’s brand manager, Ira C Herbert, heralded it as a new direction that “responds to research which shows that young people seek the real, the original and the natural as an escape from phoniness.”
Evidently, a counterfeiting ring in Mexico didn’t get that memo. They have been busted making and distributing fake Coca Cola. It wasn’t the “Real Thing,” not even close. It didn’t look right, and it didn’t taste right. People noticed the difference.
The same principle applies to our Christian faith. We need to be looking for the real thing, the true Gospel, not something that has been twisted to fit today’s society or worldview.
There are always going to be charlatans and hucksters trying to lead people astray or take their money, but if we are in touch with God, and well-versed in his word, we will recognize false teaching and hucksters right away. Our verse today gives us a warning: avoid anyone who comes at you with teaching that is human in origin, or tries to lead you astray. Don’t listen to them and try to spot their flaws; run fast, run far.
Today’s Readings: 1 Kings 17-19; Colossians 2
