Luke 3:19-20
John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done. So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.
How does a worm get inside an apple? Perhaps you think the worm burrows in from the outside. No, scientists have discovered that the worm comes from inside. But how does he get in there? Simple! An insect lays an egg in the apple blossom. Sometime later, the worm hatches in the heart of the apple, then eats his way out. Sin, like the worm, begins in the heart and works out through a person’s thoughts, words, and actions.
Not many people like being told when they are wrong, and Herod was wrong. And like the egg in the apple blossom, his sin grew and grew. He had married his niece and his half-brother’s wife. Not two different women, either. His wife was his niece who he had stolen from his half-brother. All we need now is Jerry Springer or Maury Povich…
John the Baptist did what few others had done. John told Herod he was sinning. Herod’s sin had grown from an egg in a blossom to the worm that ruins the apple. Herod had John jailed, adding to his list of sins.
What sins are growing in your apple blossom? Do you have bitterness or hatred in your heart for something that has been done to you? Maybe it’s a jealousy for something or someone, or a secret desire that drives you forward.
Whatever the sin is, the time to kill it is now, while it is still growing in the blossom of your life. Do not wait for it to be full grown or you will ruin more than an apple, you can ruin your whole life, and the lives of others.
