Mark 9:23-24
“What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”
I love today’s passage because it teaches us a simple truth: our faith is in a merciful loving God who can take the little bit of faith we have and move mountains with it!
The man in today’s passage had a son that was afflicted with a demon who tried to kill the boy. In faith he brought the boy to Jesus and said, “Have mercy on us, and help us, if you can.”
“If” is a huge word! Notice that he brought his son to Jesus, so he had a belief that Jesus could heal him. But the man questioned his own faith. He didn’t question God’s power, just his own faith.
We often struggle with whether or not we are worthy of God’s blessings, and that struggle brings a tiny bit of doubt along with it.
There was once a good woman who was well known among her circle for her simple faith, and her great calmness in the midst of many trials. Another woman, living at a distance, hearing of her, said, “I must go and see that woman, and learn the secret of her holy, happy life.”
She went; and questioned the woman, and said, “Are you the woman with the great faith?”
“No,” she replied, “I am not the woman with the great faith; but I am the woman with a little faith in the great God.”
Our amount of faith is not the key to God’s blessings. God’s power, mercy and love for us is. Your faith in a loving, caring God can banish any “if” you have!
