To Serve, Not Be Served
Matthew 20:28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
James and John’s mom went to Jesus, looking to get a little something extra for her kids. Hey, I’m not going to fault her, what parent doesn’t want something better for their children?
But Jesus wasn’t all about who sits on the right hand, or who sits on the left hand. Jesus had another way for his followers to act.
Basically, we are to lead from the bottom up. Become a servant to become great in God’s kingdom. In fact, to be really great, you must consider yourself a slave.
Then, just in case you thought this was Jesus flexing his spiritual muscle and status, he said today’s verse: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Once again, Jesus set the example for us by living it out himself. At the cross where he was crucified he lived this verse out so powerfully. He gave his life so ours could be redeemed. So we need to be about serving others, through aspect of our lives. We serve in churches, in our communities, and we serve others directly. That is being great in God’s kingdom!
