Philippians 1:6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
One day Billy and Ruth Graham were driving through a long stretch of road construction. They had numerous slowdowns, detours, and stops along the way. Finally they reached the end of all that difficulty, and smooth pavement stretched out before them. This sign caught Ruth's attention: "End of construction. Thanks for your patience."
That highway construction is a perfect metaphor for our Christian walk. When we first come to Christ we have a lot of sin and little of him, we are at the beginning of a long road. The engineers who put together the plans for the road know what it will be like at the completion of the project.
As we grow in our faith we become more like Christ as the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, and slowly starts chiseling away the things that don’t belong. Our lives get closer and closer to what God wants us to be. There will be others with you on this project. Some of their roads are closer to completion than yours. Some will be just starting construction, looking to you for tips to make it easier.
The master engineer is always there, patiently guiding the process, tackling issues as they arrive, keeping everything on track.
One day we will walk into heaven and see that lovely highway of our lives all spread before us. We will look back at the jumble of dirt and mess that our roads were before we started, and marvel that such a beautiful road could come from such destruction.
And the master engineer will grin a broad grin and say, “Welcome in, your construction is complete. You made it!”
So be patient, God isn’t finished with you yet. He is building something great in you.
