Luke 12:6
“What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them.
Charlie Brown, the comic strip character, identified with the underdog, probably because he always felt like one. In one scene he was building a birdhouse when the cynical Lucy came by. “I’m building it for sparrows,” Charlie told her. Lucy said, “For sparrows? Nobody builds birdhouses for sparrows.” “I do,” replied Charlie Brown. “I always stick up for the underbird.”
When Jesus spoke today’s verse to the crowd, they understood exactly what he meant. Sparrows were cheap food. The poor would gather them in nets, cook them and eat them. Everybody could afford sparrows. They were cheap, plentiful, and nobody cared for them or about them.
When things go wrong in our lives it is easy to think that God has forgotten us. We start feeling sorry for ourselves and mope around. We sing our favorite song, “Nobody loves me, everybody hates , I think I’ll eat some worms…” We wallow in the mud of self-pity. We feel like sparrows.
But God hasn’t forgotten you! He even cares about sparrows who are ignored by everybody until it is time to eat. God sent his own son, Jesus, to die on a cross for your sins. God has a plan for you, and he loves you more than you know. That doesn’t mean you won’t go through trials and tribulations. Those times are necessary for us to grow spiritually and as humans. When it gets rough in your life trust that God is letting you do some growing, and it is for your sake.
You may feel like the ultimate underbird, but God is for you!
