Undeserved Grace
Acts 15:11
We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus.
While we were in Florida we went over to The Villages, a huge retirement complex. As we walked around, we were struck how many old people were there. That’s when the realization hit us: we were there because we are old! At the Flying Biscuit I ate cheesy grits for the first time. It was a transformational experience! I had shunned grits all my life, yet now I was a true believer.
I remember a story about two city pastors who went to the south for a conference. When the breakfast arrived, they were shocked to find a yellowish white puddle on their plates. They asked the waitress what the the puddle was.
The waitress answered, “Those are grits.”
One of the pastors said, “Well, I didn’t order them, and I don’t want to pay for them.”
The waitress looked at him patiently and said, “Sir, this is the South. You don’t order the grits, and you don’t pay for the grits, you just get ‘em.”
Stay with me now, God’s grace is a lot like grits. You don’t deserve God’s grace, you can’t earn it, you just receive it. A man I greatly admired, Ken Dukes, gave me a Bible that had “Unmerited Favor” engraved on the cover. Ken had tears in his eyes when he gave me the Bible and he said, “Unmerited Favor describes my whole life with God. Without his grace, we would all be lost.”
Undeserved grace. Unmerited favor. Grace like grits. However you put it, it is the key to God’s love for us, and the answer to our greatest need.
