Use The Right Tools
2 Corinthians 10:3-4
We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.
My boss came to me the other day and said, “Jerry, I need a trench dug. It has to be three feet wide, four feet deep, and twenty feet long. You only have one day to complete it, because other contractors will be here tomorrow to work in the ditch.”
“Sure,” I said, “I’ll fire up the backhoe and get right on it. It’ll probably take a couple of hours.”
He shook his head and answered, “Nope, all you can use is this 3-inch garden trowel. You better get to work…”
I can tell you right now, that trench ain’t gonna get dug! I could maybe dig you a 3-inch by 4-inch by twenty-inch trench with a trowel, but that’s about it. Why would you dig with a trowel when you have a backhoe? The backhoe is going to be faster and way more efficient. To do the right job, you need the right tools.
I have spoken to many people who are frightened by the way the world is going right now. There are so many crazy things happening out there, sinful things, and we are supposed to just accept it, and nod that it’s okay. We’ll, it’s not okay. As Christians, we are supposed to make a difference in a sinful world, not stand by and give our approval.
There are some saying we need a movement! We need picket signs, we should host holy sit-ins in the halls of Congress. We should disrupt every rally that espouses an unscriptural view. That’ll show ‘em!
No, that is exactly what we should not do. By fighting things their way, we are playing right into the devil’s hands and digging with a garden trowel. Why would we fight with tools that are of this earth when we can fight using God’s tools? They are more effective and way more efficient!
In today’s verse Paul tells us exactly how to fix the world today. We use God’s tools to do God’s work. We pray, we love, we teach, we reach out in love to those who are lost and hurting. You know, like Jesus did. That doesn’t mean we turn a blind eye, or accept all of the sin around us. Jesus didn’t.
We’re not going to cudgel this world into loving Christ, but we may pray and serve it into loving him.
