Matthew 24:36 “However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.
When Lanette was pregnant with our oldest son, Isaac, we had to go to Lamaze class. Basically, that is the class where they teach the mothers how to birth a baby, and they teach a job to the fathers so they have something to do during the process. I’m not sure exactly who this Lamaze person was, but what they figured out didn’t help me. I was alternating between being freaked out and grossed out. The doctor offered me an epidural!
They teach you all of this to help you prepare for the birth of your child. What they don’t teach you is how to survive the last two weeks before the due date. Every time Lanette turned over in bed, or went into the bathroom in the middle of the night, I would jump up, get dressed and head out to the car. There were a lot of false alarms! Somehow, in all of the excitement and getting ready, I would forget to take her to the car with me. Hey, don’t bother me with details, I’m a big picture guy!
In today’s verse, Jesus tells us that no one knows when he is going to come back for us. It’s coming, we just don’t know when. Just like pregnancy, we can see signs, but we don’t know when.
If we don’t know when he is coming back, what do we do? We get ready, and stay ready. We go about our daily routine, but always with an eye toward today being the day. Living like this means our lives have to be right, our hearts need to be following God, and we need to be doing what he wants us to do.
We are waiting for Christ’s return, and it could be any day now, the signs are sure there. Now it is time for us to make sure we are ready.
