John 2:10 “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
A state trooper pulled over a man who was driving down the interstate for speeding. The state trooper smelled alcohol on the man’s breath, and then saw an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, “Sir, have you been drinking?” “Just water,” says the man. The trooper says, “Then why do I smell wine?” The man looks at the bottle and says, “Well there you are! Jesus has done it again!”
Jesus did turn the water to wine, probably not the stuff the guy’s car, though.
There is a lot of subtext in this story. The host would have been terribly embarrassed to run out of wine at his child’s wedding. Jesus stepped in and turned everything on its head. Instead of embarrassment, the host got congratulations. Instead of recrimination, the host received praise.
Jesus is still turning water into wine. He takes the dull disappointments in our lives and turns them into a life that is worth living. His love takes our fears, hurts, and pain and turns them into fulfillment and peace.
Water into wine, pain into peace, it is all available to you in Christ.
