Weaklings!
2 Corinthians 12:9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.
In the 20’s and 30’s a new character appeared in the New York World. The character’s name was Casper Milquetoast, and chinless, skinny man who had no discernible backbone. Created by H.T. Weber for his comic strip The Timid Soul, Webster described Milquetoast as “the man who speaks softly and gets hit by the big stick.”
Casper Milquetoast is named after a bland food, milk toast, which was touted as the appropriate food for someone with a weak or nervous stomach.
In our verse today, the Apostle Paul admits that he has a weakness, and he thanks God for it because that let’s God’s grace and mercy be shown.
We are all weak in places, and for most of us that means that we are Casper Milquetoast in those areas. We are prey, constantly being kicked around and ruled by those weaknesses. Instead of being ruled by those weaknesses we should let God’s grace and mercy rule in those areas. As Paul said, “God’s power works best in weakness.”
If you have a weak spot in your life, let God show you how he can be made strong in that area. Take your weakness to God and let him show his power. Then you can say like Paul, “I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.”
