When I was young…
Psalms 25:7. Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth. Remember me in the light of your unfailing love, for you are merciful, O LORD.
A friend of mine from high school posted a picture she found in her mother’s belongings. It was a picture from March 21, 1977, my senior year in high school. The picture showed the Central Union High School Speech Team, and there, right next to Mr. Maddox, our speech coach, was a doughy kid with glasses and some kind of weird hair that can only be described as a bargain basement Justin Bieber cut. I was 18 years old, and the world was full of possibilities.
In nine days I will turn 64, the absolute oldest I have ever been. I have fewer possibilities now. I am one year away from Medicare! AARP is proud to call me a member, at least that’s what they say. What happened to the fresh-faced kid from the picture?
He grew up. He worked jobs, went to school, got married and raised a family. Over the years I have made so many mistakes. I had permed hair in the 80’s for crying out loud! I have not always been the Christian or the man I was supposed to be.
So what David wrote in today’s Psalm strikes a chord with me. I am so thankful that I serve a God who will forgive the sins of my youth, and the sins of my old age. A God who is merciful, and has unfailing love for me. His love not only forgives me, it keeps me and guides me every day. Of course, you can have the same love and guidance, all you have to do is ask him.
