Jesus had a way of cutting to the chase. He knew how to ask the right question at the right time. Today’s passage is a great example of that.
He is talking to his disciples and asks them, “Who do people say I am?”
He got all kinds of answers. Matthew 16:14“ Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”
The Jesus asks the most important, life-impacting question of all: Matthew 16:15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
If you go to church, and even if you don’t, you may have heard all kinds of opinions about who Jesus is. Some will say he was God in human form. Some will say he wasn’t God, but he was a good teacher and moral leader. Some will say he is fictional, and nothing more than fables.
The Christian writer, A W Tozer said, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." The most important thing!
Others may have opinions about Jesus, but their opinion doesn’t change the fact that you won’t be judged by the opinions of others, only YOU can say Jesus is to you.
Can you say, like Peter, Matthew 16:16 “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” That is the question to be decided. Only you can decide who Jesus is to you. I can’t decide for you, your pastor can’t, your parents can’t, the world can’t. Once you make that decision, you can verify it by living for him, and following him. Then your life will be truly transformed.
