1 Kings 1:49 Then all of Adonijah’s guests jumped up in panic from the banquet table and quickly scattered.
There are a lot of people who will hitch their wagons to a rising star. They will fawn all over the next big thing, making sure to stay in their good graces. As long as you are famous and powerful, you will have friends.
Well, not friends, exactly. Hangers on. Users. People with low character and morals.
Adonijah had gotten a wild hair that he was going to be king. Now, his father, David, was still alive and king, but Adonijah had decided it, so he proclaimed it. And he had followers! There were all kinds of folks willing to pledge allegiance to the new king, and I am sure they thought their own star would rise, too.
David and God had other plans, though. Solomon was named and anointed as king. When the word got to Adonijah and his crew at their “coronation” ceremony, everybody scattered. Adonijah was suddenly watching the back sides of people as they ran to get away. Oooops! As the old saying goes, “With friends like that, who needs enemies?”
True friends are ones who will not only stand beside you during rough times, they will also tell you when you are doing something stupid like declaring yourself king.
Find yourself godly friends who will love you, care for you, and also kick your tail when you need it!
