Wrong House
Mark 10:17
As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
The rich young man approached Jesus and asked a seemingly simple question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Seems simple, right?
But there is a problem. The problem is that tiny word, “do.” He wanted a set of instructions. He didn’t want Jesus to be his Savior, he wanted Jesus to teach him the steps to be his own savior.
Big difference!
Jesus told him to follow all of the commandments. The man’s response, “Oh, I already do all of that…” Really? You have all of the commandments on lock? You never fail? There is a hint of arrogance and self-satisfaction in his answer.
The Jesus hit him the the bomb, “Go sell everything you have, Give it to the poor, then come back.” At this, the rich man walked away saddened, because not only did he have a lot of things, his things had him.
Imagine getting to the top of your ladder and realizing you are on the wrong house. That’s what happened here. The rich man climbed and climbed, then found out that all he had been working for was just a noose around his neck.
The things of this world will never satisfy you like a relationship with Jesus will. All of the stuff you can amass will not fill that hole in your soul, only Jesus will. Is your ladder on the wrong house?
