Romans 6:18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.
Years ago Bob Dylan wrote the song, “You Gotta Serve Somebody.” The words are incredible:
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance,
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world,
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord,
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.
Who are you choosing to serve? The world offers you unlimited things, but it makes you a slave to them. And make no mistake about it, the things of this world absolutely enslave. Ask any alcoholic or drug addict and they will tell you that eventually their “fun” turned into slavery to the next drink or next fix. The pursuit of money quickly turns into the drudgery of working to pay for all of your “toys.”
Serving God makes you a slave to righteous loving. What does this slavery look like? You are a better person, a better spouse, and a better parent. Your life has purpose and meaning beyond self-gratification.
Who do you serve?
